Cedar Cove

Cedar Cove was built in 2003-2006 by Lee Anderson from his own design for his grandchildren.  Tom Dwyer, then-owner of Isak Hansen & Sons, provided architecture and framing services while Lee did all interior carpentry.  Electrical was subbed in and Lee’s friends did final hook ups.  Information on the cabin and appliances is located in the bottom drawer of the built-in closet.

Below is information about how things work at Cedar Cove.  But first, you must read Grandpa Lee's journal he wrote while building Cedar Cove!  The love he put into this beautiful little cabin on the lake is so enormous.  If you did not see it on the home page, you can click below to read the transcribed version.

Cedar Cove was not built to be used in cold weather.  It can be opened once it is no longer below freezing at night and should be closed by around MEA (mid-October) or when the temperatures are consistently below freezing at night.  This will keep the pipes from freezing!

Entertainment system:  There is a receiver and TV with Apple TV.  To play music, change the input on the receiver to “SAT/CBL”, pair your device by pushing down on the blue ring of the blue tooth device (will show red) and selecting “B06+” on your blue tooth devices.  To watch media, change the input on the receiver to “BD”, turn on Apple TV (push “menu” on small remote), and either sign into an available service or use AirPlay to stream from your device to the TV.  The Apple TV name is “CrappleTV|2”  and will send a code to your device to connect.

Heat:  Cedar Cove is heated by the wood stove.  There is a small baseboard heater in the bathroom to heat it as needed - electricity is very expensive on the North Shore so use sparingly.  Keep bathroom door closed when in use or it will try to heat the entire cabin and run constantly.

Water:  Cold well water is supplied from Wind Song.  Hot water is from a continuous in-line hot water heater located under the kitchen sink.  Instructions for the heater can be found in the cabin file located in the drawer  beneath the bedroom’s storage cabinet.

Washer & Dryer:  The washer and dryer are located in Cedar Cove’s bathroom.  The washer should only be operated on a “low” spin cycle as it shakes and could damage the cabin floor.  Instructions for the washer and dryer can be found in the cabin file located in the bottom drawer of the bedroom’s dresser.  Do not use bleach in the washer or it will harm the septic system.

Wastewater:  Wastewater is pumped from the cabin to the septic system located between Cedar Cove and the driveway.  The septic permits depict the location of pumps and piping.  Do not put harmful cleaners/chemicals down the drains or toilet or it will harm the septic system.  A toilet plunger is located in the garage.

Wifi:  The wifi network is Cedar Cove.  Contact Christa if you want to know the password.  The Cedar Cove wifi router is located in the bench seating in the dining area - it does not need to be removed from the bench.  See Wind Song for a description of the wifi system.  To receive phone calls at the cabin, change mobile phone setting to receive internet/WiFi calling.

Wood, kindling and stove: Wood is stored in the wood rick and kindling is stored in the nearby bin.  Take wood from the side with the fire symbol.  Order new wood when half the wood is gone.  The wood stove does not have a damper to open and can be started with kindling, birchbark and paper.  There is a silver lever on the center of the front ledge that regulates the burn rate.  Keep to the right to start the stove and to have maximum heat; move to the left to reduce heat and have fire last longer.  The stove and flue should be cleaned every 2-3 years or when smoke starts to draw into the cabin with the door is open.  A guide for operating the stove is below:

[2022 Note:  The stove does not have a telescoping flue so needs to be disassembled to clean.  Doug recommended installation of new interior gaskets at next cleaning.]
